Yes. There's no concept of social shaming either. There's no reputation to uphold, or family or whatever else.
You're on your own.
Partly why there's an epidemic of obesity: no one cares.
It's a very "hands-off" culture.
We will gladly lead people to their death through over consumption of sugar. The same as tobacco!
While in the East, there's a concept of the greater good for all(? maybe?) At least at a superficial face value. In order to maintain harmony in the east, you have to go through the steps of pretending to care.
Presentability. Upholding your role.
There's no such obligation in the West.
There's no concept of face in Western worlds either (for most lower social strata).
Of course there's face when it comes to business, but that's it.
The central struggle for Westerners (or in particular the candid Americans) is a way to unify the self through the delta that makes up living: streams of working, streams of family, streams of friends.
We want to unify it into one river.
In Eastern cultures (feel free to correct if I'm wrong) it seems it's quite fine to have distinct roles and forever abide by them, even if it pains you.
You are the younger brother, and that is your role.
Or you are the mother, and that is your role.
You are a friend, nothing more, and don't intrude anymore than a simple friend either!
You are not allowed to cross the line of that role.
In America at least, people cross that all the time because we're partly insane, I guess.
